Local Love : A Farmer’s Market Feast

Tyler and I had some of our best friends visit us a few weekends ago. Together, we enjoyed North Carolina’s Farmers Market – first, breakfast! then, vegetable ‘picking.’

We all enjoyed a good country breakfast – Tyler and I shared the farmer’s breakfast, which I am pretty sure included every possible option save the omelet.

Then we headed over with our sleepy baby and excited friends to the fresh produce. We had to go quickly because little man was falling apart. But we sure did get some good stuff!

Anika and I spent the afternoon cooking our little hearts out – and here’s what we enjoyed for dinner that night! Truly a southern fresh summer feast.

we gathered all of this and more from the farmer’s market – at this point, the squash is already in the casserole dish, ready to go!

these peaches tasted like dessert and the blackberries were a perfect pairing with them

a good friend of mine, and true southern lady, Lila, made this delicious rosea jelly. What is rosea jelly, you ask? It’s flower petals melted down with sugar. The fragrance and color is beautiful and the flavor, light. We enjoyed the jelly on sister shubert dinner rolls, our favorite.

Anika and I fried okra for our first time – and it was perfect! Honestly, it’s really a simple process and I want to do it more often.

Tyler wasn’t sure he even liked squash casserole, but this recipe won him over! It was so fresh and yummy to my tummy; good southern comfort food.

I asked Anika to look through some family recipes to choose dessert. Of all the recipes, of course she chose Mema’s Quick Fudge Cake. It is a delicious!!!! cake that honestly wows me every time.

TASTE AND SEE : Strawberry Bread

Remember those could not resist strawberries from the North Hill’s Farmer’s Market?

See my strawberries?

Well, with them came a pamphlet complete with recipes. I figured if the strawberry patch itself is recommending recipes, they must be good.

So to start – I do plan to make many a baked good with fresh strawberries this season – I baked the Strawberry Bread.

Let me share with you the recipe

** PS before we get started, you should know this makes two loaves. I halved the recipe because one, I only own one loaf pan and two, because I was not sure if we needed two whole loaves of strawberry bread and three, the bread takes an hour to bake and to wait for my pan to be ready to bake the second loaf would have taken… well, too long.

Strawberry Bread

3 C flour
2 C sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
4 eggs, beaten
1/2 C oil
2 1/2 C strawberries, chopped very fine

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Then, stir together remaining ingredients. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, add wet ingredients, and stir until smooth. Spoon into two greased and floured loaf pans (9x5x3). Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

I think the before it's baked strawberry mixture looks pretty in my pink mixing bowl

Looks good and tastes good : This is what the yummy bread looked like hot out of the oven. It practically slid out of the pan, too, in perfect form. Of course, I appreciated that!

I love this emile henry scalloped rectangular serving platter I have. It’s been perfect for breads, cookies, even crackers and topped with a bowl of dip.

LOCAL LOVE : north hills farmer’s market

Last Saturday morning Tyler and I packed up ourselves and our little man and ventured out to the first for 2012 North Hills Farmers Market. We chose to go to this little one because it is closer to our home than the big one downtown. It worked better for little love’s morning nap.

When we arrived, this is what we saw…

quick iPhone picture in case it was blog worthy... and it was

White square peaked tents shading a variety of vendors and farmers made into a square around the center of North Hills. Under the tents, farmers with eggs, grass-fed meat, vegetables of all kinds including beets and lettuce, smell the good scent from a mile a way strawberries, vendors with herbs, baked yummies, spices, and colorful fresh-cut flowers. Everyone was laid back and happy. Everyone was enjoying the spring sunshine, the early morning wonderfulness of it all.

I was determined to purchase some herbs. And I was lured into buying a pint of strawberries. Like I said, you could smell them from a mile away. They were SO! red and SO! delicious smelling. I couldn’t resist.

Tyler and I walked around the square once, eyeing and admiring everyone’s goods. After examining what was what and seeing how much everyone charged for whatever they were selling, we settled on basil and flat leaf parsley from a friendly vendor who said they’re guaranteed. “If they die, bring ‘em back.” That’s good news for this hopeful green thumb. Then I picked out my pint of strawberries and off we went. Happy couple. Satisfied customers. With a heavy-eyed baby strolling home for morning nap.
