a christmas devotion

Each year since I can remember, my dad’s side of the family has gotten together at Christmas for Family Christmas Day. It started as a Christmas Eve brunch hosted by my grandmother. Now, with the growth of family through children and marriages and children again, it is a Christmas breakfast which, for our family, begins the Christmas season. It is one of my two favorite meals of the year – I love Thanksgiving too! We eat together, pray together, play THE Ornament Game together, sing carols together, and one of the heads of the family shares a Christmas devotion.

This year was Gan Gan’s turn. Gan Gan, otherwise known as Kenneth, is my great uncle. A faithful to the Lord Methodist minister in his eighties, he’s brighter and more alive than ever. His life is hid in Christ. There’s a twinkle in his eyes, tender strength in his voice, and old man gnarled hands that help to explain all that he’s saying.

He told the story of Mary hearing her assignment from the angel. He told of Joseph, a true man’s man, who, instead of disowning his betrothed, he kept her, loved her, and even helped to deliver the precious baby. He reminded us about Simeon, who waited into his old age for the Messiah to come. He recounted the story of the shepherds, lowly, sleepy men who got to see with their very own eyes a multitude of heavenly hosts.  And he said – they all responded to the Good News with rejoicing. Mary, Joseph, Simeon, and the Shepherds – each one of them listened to the angels, to the Lord, held Jesus in their arms, and rejoiced exceedingly in the Lord.

This is the true act of worship. We wait for the Lord – we accept the Lord – we worship the Lord – and we respond to our GREAT SALVATION with exceeding gladness in the LORD.

Gan Gan said – we enjoy life, ourselves, each other only when we enjoy Jesus. Only when we love Jesus will we love ourselves. Only when we seek Jesus – when we find the Lord – will we know ourselves. Christ is JOY Christ is LOVE Christ is LIFE.

And then he closed letting us know that Christ, who is our all in all, demands an answer “Accept Him – or don’t.”

Ok, so as some of you know, I have used Mary Kay products since I knew it was important to wash my face. And now, I am a little Mary Kay girl – (a MK consultant). Some of you probably don’t know that I have dry skin. When I’m a grandmother, I will definitely have wrinkles. Of course, not until I’m 97 – Timewise face wash and moisturizer is awesome – and only because of smiles and laughing, but still, definitely I will have wrinkles. So when MK announced a moisturizing mask, I was like, ‘Sign me up!’

I ordered two of them – one for me to try; one for the first girl to want to enjoy glowing, supple skin all winter long.  (Instead of pasty white dried out sagging dull skin from the winter witch of the west )

I just got them in the mail – so I’ll let you know how wonderful it is when I try it. And please, let me know if you are that first girl. Or second. We can all be in the wonderful winter skin club

a couple more open house recipes

We really had a wonderful time at our ‘Happy Birthday Jesus’ Holiday Open House. We enjoyed the time with our family and friends, enjoyed yummy food, and loved to see all of the school supplies that were donated. (There is still time to give – Matt leaves the first week of January.)

A few of the girls at the party asked me for a couple of the recipes – so here they are; to share with them, to share with y’all. Enjoy!

Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (This is not to reduce the Lord to the level of food / I delight in the fact that the Lord gave us good food to enjoy and so glorify His name!)

From Betty Crocker, I (well, Tyler) made Creamy Coffee Filled Brownies. I found the recipe and gathered the ingredients, but Tyler actually mixed it all together and made it happen.

Creamy Coffee Filled Brownies

1 box Betty Crocker® chocolate chunk premium brownie mix (We used dark chocolate mix; if you do not have the chocolate chunk and want that, if you have chocolate chips on hand, you can add those to your brownie mix)

- Water, vegetable oil and eggs as called for on brownie mix box
4 cups powdered sugar
1 (3 oz) pkg. cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
2 tablespoon coffee-flavored liqueur or coffee (we used a shot of espresso)
1 cup dark chocolate chips
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • Heat oven to 350° F (325° F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease or spray 8-inch square pan.
  • Make brownies as directed on box, using water, oil, and eggs. Spread into pan. Bake 39 to 42 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from edge of pan comes out clean. Cool completely.
  • In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons butter and liqueur (or like us, your shot of espresso) with electric mixer on high speed until smooth and creamy. Spread over cooled brownies.
  • In small microwaveable bowl, microwave chocolate chips and butter uncovered on High 1 to 2 minutes, stirring once, until melted. (We did this on the stove top in a sauce pan.) Carefully spread over filling. Refrigerate 30 minutes or until set. Store in refrigerator.

Peppermint Bark is one of the simplest holiday treats to make. I am going to share with you Paula Deen’s recipe – simply because her recipe is like everyone else’s. I did not use the optional peppermint extract and I liked it a much better; I like the sweet white chocolate taste over the bright peppermint-y taste. I think enough of the peppermint taste comes through from the red and white candy canes.
Peppermint Bark Recipe
  • Crushed candy canes, to yield 1 cup
  • 2 pounds white chocolate
  • Peppermint flavorings, optional

Place candy canes in a plastic bag and hammer into 1/4-inch chunks or smaller. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. (I just use a larger pan underneath a smaller pan.) Combine candy cane chunks with chocolate (add peppermint flavoring at this point if desired.) Pour mixture onto a cookie sheet layered with parchment or waxed paper and spread with a spatula. Place in the refrigerator for 45 minutes or until firm. Remove from cookie sheet and break into pieces (like peanut brittle.)

the song on our lips

I shared with y’all a little while ago that our family verse is Psalm 115:1.

Well, we have a family song, too. It goes like this :

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. AMEN.

Tyler and I smiled our way through our wedding recessional to this song. We literally began our lives together with The Doxology.

all the trimmings

I want to share with you a few photographs from around my home – it’s decorated for Christmas!

This sign greets everyone who enters our home

Our stockings - all three!! - are hung by the chimney with care

Snowy Tabletop Decoration

O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! Our Christmas tree has ornaments from Tyler's childhood, my childhood, ornaments to 'bring it all together' like snowflakes and snowballs, and now Baby's First Christmas ornaments!

We decorate for Christmas with everything; even the handsoap is Christmasy!

I love this snowy church that I found at NOFO

Y’all I hope you enjoyed a little glimpse inside of my home at Christmas (thanks to my iPhone). I want you to know I do have fun decorating; I mean all of the Christmas decorations that crowd the stores are just so cute! And I want you to know that I love decorating especially because it is a way in which we can represent the beauty of the Lord, reflect His character, proclaim His name and His message – and at Christmastime that message truly is, For unto us a Son is given, unto us a King is born – and His name is CHRIST THE LORD!
